This year's Alcohol Awareness Week runs from the 1 - 7 July, with the theme for 2024 being 'understanding alcohol harm'. The aim of this theme is to raise awareness of the role that alcohol plays in our society and what 'alcohol harm' actually means.
The Royal College of Physicians is a founding member of the Alcohol Health Alliance (AHA), which is a coalition of over 60 organisations working together to reduce the harm caused by alcohol. The AHA campaigns for evidence-based measures to tackle alcohol harm and the effects of health services.
To combat this growing issue, the AHA has called upon all political parties to commit to action on alcohol harm with a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy free from alcohol industry influence.
A manifesto has been created which centres around the following four key areas:
- protecting children and supporting people impacted by alcohol harm
- empowering individuals and building thriving communities
- strengthening the NHS and frontline services
- preserving the public purse.
You can read the full manifesto here. Further support and information is available through Alcohol Change UK.
